The new video-centric social media platform Periscope is all about living in the moment. It provides users the opportunity to indulge their voyeuristic side with live video taken on someone’s phone anywhere in the world, right now.
Hit record and show off your latest product or answer some FAQs from your desk. Get that hilarious motivational poster on your wall in the shot. This is a fabulous opportunity to get personal with your audience and show them what goes on in your company. People like to give their business to other people; especially people they can relate to.
To say Periscope is growing quickly is putting it mildly. The platform launched on March 26, 2015 and by August 2, 2015 there were more than 10 million registered users. You don’t need to set up a production studio to get going, just download the Periscope app to your phone and go. Videos stay up for a maximum 24 hours.
Fun! But how are you going to attract new customers?
The same way that you do with all of your social media content; create something worth sharing. Take a look at your followers across all social media platforms and see who else they follow and what type of content they share. What can you do that is comparable? Keep content high on the list of priorities, but take into consideration video length, and location, too.
How can Periscope videos work for business? Think about the questions you get asked about your company or how the industry works. What was most interesting when you first researched or launched your brand? Here are a few ideas:
- Demonstrations: Show the people how your product works, what it’s good for, and how you use it in your own life.
- Q&A: Answer questions that you get from customers, or encourage followers to ask live questions. Look online for questions people have asked in forums about your industry. Answer one question per stream, or answer a bunch, but consider your audience’s time constraints and preferences.
- Behind-the-Scenes: So what do you do all day? How does the magic happen? What’s in your fridge? What kind of action figure collection do you have on your desk?
- Events: Show everyone what’s going on at your public event and why they should come on down!
- Announcements: Introduce a new product, service, partnership, or teammate.
Be funny, be candid, be serious, but above all, be real because that human quality is what will get viewers to connect with you and share your content.
Hot tips:
- Spend time on your title. It has to set you apart and clearly describe your video.
- Use hashtags. Benefit from hashtags by using existing ones that are commonly known to your ideal clients and your video. E.g. #WebsiteDesign #BehindTheScenes #MondayMotivation. Create your own in addition to, not instead of existing hashtags.
- Ask your followers what they want to see. Give the people what they want!
