You’d get up out of bed in the middle of the night to snack on proof that social media works. You want ROI, you want spreadsheets and charts and a clear path leading from that cat meme you posted last week to the sale you rung up this morning. You know what you have to do? You have to leave all that behind. Forget about everything you know.

The secret to successfully understanding the value of social media lies in understanding that social media marketing is anything but traditional. Social media changes all the time because the way that people use social media changes all the time. Social media is keeping up with your customers. Are you?

Are people going to want to share the last job you did for a client. Nope! But they’re going to want to share that hilarious cat meme about Mondays. A lot of people hate Monday, and a lot of people are delighted by animal pictures. It’s magic! Okay, it’s really psychology and sociology and marketing. It’s smart.

When a user shares your social media content, your original post goes with it, so everyone sees your company name and logo. Furthermore, people actually look at screens together! Someone will pull out their phone and show their real-life, local friend your hilarious Monday cat meme. Your name is getting out there both online and in the real world. Your brand will be associated with positive thoughts and so, when your products or services are needed, there’s a very good chance that yours is the first company the user connects with when their need arises. They might even start to follow you.

Design your social campaigns around connections with your customer base and not just your brand and business. Post about your client jobs anyway to show everyone how awesome you are, just don’t count on those posts being shared. Cat memes give you hives? Instead of a cat share a Happy Monday meme about the benefits of taking a walk on your lunch break. It doesn’t have to have anything to do with your business to make a connection between your brand and the user, the social media platform is carrying your name and logo forward for you. In this Happy Monday case the double whammy is relatability and education. Give them hope that they can get through this day. Give them something they’ll want to tell their friends about.
